Reenergizing the East Med: EMGF Workshop Sparks Action Toward a Stronger, Sustainable East Med Energy Future

05/08/2025

The East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF) concluded its landmark workshop, “Reenergizing the East Med: A Collaborative Workshop to Drive Implementation, Growth & Efficiency,” with renewed momentum and a shared commitment to transforming strategy into action across the region’s energy landscape.

Held on 7–8 May at the Tolip El Galala Hills in Ain Sokhna, the two-day event brought together government officials, private sector leaders, regulators, investors, and technical experts to confront the East Med’s most pressing energy challenges and craft actionable solutions.

Day 1: Technical Focus on Increasing Gas Production

Day one centered on advancing gas exploration, production efficiency, and infrastructure resilience, while integrating environmental sustainability. Participants engaged in hands-on technical workshops and collaborative discussions around:

  • Gas Supply & Exploration: Examining new technologies and evolving market dynamics.

  • Infrastructure Optimization: Addressing pipeline resilience, LNG infrastructure, and operational efficiencies.

  • Emissions Reduction & Decarbonization: Exploring CCUS solutions, methane mitigation, and best practices for flaring and venting reduction.

Outcomes included the identification of innovative production technologies, and stronger synergies between public and private stakeholders focused on security of supply and sustainable growth.

Day 2: Strategy Becomes Action

The second day marked a shift from dialogue to implementation. Seven dedicated Implement Workshop Groups tackled key components of EMGF’s updated strategic agenda, producing actionable frameworks for 2025–2026. Topics included:

  1. Interconnectivity & Export Solutions

  2. Supply & Demand Modeling

  3. Harmonized Export Regulations

  4. Exploration & Infrastructure Investment

  5. Production & Processing Expansion

  6. Decarbonization Projects

  7. Carbon Intensity Certification

Each group worked to translate EMGF studies into tangible deliverables and policy recommendations.

Closing Roundtable & Roadmap Ahead

The workshop concluded with a high-level roundtable summarizing technical takeaways and aligning participants on the regulatory, commercial, and environmental dimensions of gas sector development. The final outcome: a clear roadmap to guide EMGF’s 2025–2026 implementation phase, reinforcing a united front for energy cooperation and sustainability in the region.

A Regional Turning Point

This workshop marks a pivotal step in EMGF’s evolution—from strategy to execution. Through open dialogue, cross-sector collaboration, and practical planning, the East Med is laying the foundation for a more competitive, efficient, and decarbonized gas sector.

The EMGF Secretariat extends its sincere thanks to all participants for their valuable contributions and looks forward to continued collaboration as we implement the Forum’s strategic priorities in the years ahead.
